Abstract Medication Adherence in Adult Patients with Bipolar Disorder: An Integrative Literature Review Objective: To examine factors contributing to nonadherence in BD and methods for directly addressing these in an effect to offer providers information that can be used to assist clients. Methods: A review of the literature from 2012 to 2017 was conducted using a computerized search using Cumulative Index to Nursing and Health Literature (CINAHL) and PsycInfo. Results: Ten studies were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. The resulting studies evenly discussed the reasons for medication non-adherence as well as treatment strategies aimed at improving adherence. Conclusion: The major findings of this study are two-fold, with one aspect determining effective strategies aimed at improving medication non-adherence in BD patients, while the other determines the reasons behind medication non-adherence. A significant portion of the research attributed non-adherence to substance abuse. Another commonality discovered was the connection between the psychosocial aspect of a patient’s life and the associated medication taking behaviors. In regard to treatment strategies aimed at improving adherence, interventions ranging from patient education to the use of electronic devices were found to be effective in improving medication adherence

The Effects of School-Based Art Therapy on Depressed Adolescents

Depression in adolescents is associated with deficient behavioral and health outcomes (Fletcher, 2019). Art therapy has been shown to be effective in treating mental health condition such as depression. A student’s academic success heavily depends on treating their depression. Community health nurses can play a vital role in advocating for adequate mental health support to improve a student’s overall well-being and academic success. The literature review contains six articles on the prevalence and impact of depression among adolescents, art therapy as an intervention for improving psychological outcomes and resilience among adolescents, and experiences of adolescent clients in art therapy within school settings. In school settings, depressive symptoms are often linked to lower test scores and poor relationships among peers. Art therapy in schools offers a wide range of support for the youth. The environment of a school has a direct impact on a student’s personal, emotional, and behavioral aspect of themselves (Fisher & Brown, 2018). Schools are important environments for identifying risk in certain students. Therefore, schools can be an appropriate setting for providing treatment (Dunne et al., 2017)

Semantic annotation in ubiquitous healthcare skills-based learning environments

    No full text
This paper describes initial work on developing a semantic annotation system for the augmentation of skills-based learning for Healthcare. Scenario driven skills-based learning takes place in an augmented hospital ward simulation involving a patient simulator known as SimMan. The semantic annotation software enables real-time annotations of these simulations for debriefing of the students, student self study and better analysis of the learning approaches of mentors. A description of the developed system is provided with initial findings and future directions for the work.<br/

Use of Best Practice Alerts to Improve Adherence to Evidence-Based Screening in Pediatric Diabetes Care

Background: Youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at increased risk for comorbid autoimmune conditions and long-term complications. To help with early identification of these complications, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has published evidence-based screening guidelines. The aim of our quality improvement intervention was to improve and sustain adherence to the ADA recommended screening guidelines to \u3e90% for youth with T1D in the Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) Diabetes Center by utilizing best practice alerts (BPA) within the electronic medical record (EMR). Methods: In accordance with the ADA Standards of Care screening guidelines for youth with T1D, we analyzed the database of TCH patients to obtain the following baseline percentages: 1) urine microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio, 2) thyroid function screen, 3) lipid panel, and 4) retinopathy screen. In the TCH EMR, we developed BPAs to alert providers and provide decision support on ADA-based screening recommendations at each clinic encounter. Comparisons were made to screening rates for each category pre- and post-intervention. Results: In the four years following the BPA build, the screening percentage for each category improved from a baseline of 90%, which has been maintained for three consecutive fiscal years. Conclusions: The use of EMR-based BPAs to alert providers of the need for evidenced-based screening is effective in increasing adherence to standard of care guidelines. With this quality improvement intervention, we achieved our goal of \u3e90% for each category. Similar tools for decision support may be effectively utilized for evidence-based screening in other disease states

Achieving workplace inclusiveness by using ergonomics risk assessment

Traditional manufacturing work practices do not consider human variability issues during the design process. However, most manual assembly activities demand high levels of repetition and speed without compromising product quality and work productivity. Individual factors including age, gender, skill, experience and anthropometry cause variations in task strategies that lead to variations in individual and organizational work performance. The ergonomics-based risk assessment methods OWAS, REBA and RULA have been used to evaluate risk levels associated with working methods. This paper discusses the need for these methods to understand and highlight the key issues generated by these variations with the objective of minimizing these variations. Methods that can be used to promote working strategies that minimize the level of risk are described. The proposed research method potentially reduces work-related musculoskeletal disorders, injuries, pain, and promotes safe, healthy, productive and more inclusive working strategies suitable for a diverse working population
